The Sculptor
Doc Evatt head
Date unknown
This bronze head is that of Herbert Vere ‘Doc’ Evatt. A former High Court judge, Evatt was elected to Parliament in 1940, and served as both Attorney General and Minister for External Affairs in the governments of John Curtin and Ben Chifley. From 1951–60 he was Labor leader and unsuccessfully fought Menzies at three elections (1954, 1955 and 1958).
Frith chose to depict Evatt without glasses, because he didn’t feel the sculpture looked quite right with them.
